Assessment of Total Sulfur in Base Oils - ASTM D7183
ASTM 7183 is a standard test method for determination of Total Sulfur in aromatic hydrocarbons and related chemicals by ultraviolet fluorescence (UV). The concentration range for this method is 0.5 to 10 mg/kg and samples can be either directly injected or placed in a boat for combustion and analysis. Base oils are a common type of sample tested using ASTM D7183 as the most commonly used base oils have less than 0.03% sulfur.
